"The space that Orient Gallery offers me to display my artwork is one that supports much more than just visual art, ideas and aesthetics; it is what keeps art going and relevant"

Khaled AlKahni

Paris-based Syrian artist Khaled Al Khani was born in the town of Hama in 1975. He grew up in Syria, receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Painting in 1991 and Bachelor’s degree in Oil Painting in 1998, both from the faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Damascus. In his work, Khani uses the canvas as a conduit through which he presents the suffering that the Syrian people have experienced, with his memory filled with painful scenes that have left an indelible mark on him and subsequently his work. Al Khani has found that, over time, many of his works translate his bitter experiences and his emotional state at the time.

Al Khani’s visual perspective uses the history and civilization of the Levant, and specifically Syria, as a backdrop. Faceless figures feature prominently in his works, creating dreamlike impressions where all the facets are interwoven in, out and around each other, with no one aspect fixed. Women feature prominently in his works, as do humanity or humankind. When viewing his paintings, we discover a rich oriental tale told through lush color formations, sometimes using single color schemes and other times of a varied palette. Such treatments can only be the offspring of experience and artistic skill acquired from the womb of this heritage.

"I do not seek out clarity and I do not favour discussing large issues in the selective language of poetry and stories."
