Georges Bassil, April 2010

Issam Darwish

Georges Bassil and the Eternal Power of Being… Indifferent toviewer’s stare and close scrutiny, Georges Bassil’s paintings standnaked and lonely – not always alone – for all to see, judge and valuefor what they are, no explanation required. But judgment is notsomething either the painter or his faithful subjects worry about; theyexist, with or without you, in a world of their own. They sometimesstare with big round dark eyes, ones that seem to know something youdon’t and are not about to unveil it at any price.

Other times, theyjust stand there, seemingly indifferent to anyone and everything thatpasses them by, while in fact providing a constant reminder that artdoesn’t always have to shout out controversy or a definite state ofbeing, it can simply whisper it while you attempt to formulate words todescribe just exactly what it is you are feeling in its presence. Itis in these quiet moments, moments that have been experienced andwidely acclaimed at Montreal, London, Nice, Dubai, Beirut, and soon inAmman, starting April 13-May 6th, at Orient Gallery, that Georges Bassilcommunicates the eternal, and somewhat weightless, power of being andleaves you all but speechless.
