Exhibition: Ghassan AbuLaban, March 2010
My paintings explore paradox and contrast, consider moody poses and verdant spaces, they aim to challenge the viewer to experience complexity. Strokes with polished curves and sharp edges; dark contours and amorphous boundaries.
The subtexts of the paintings are searing intuition, emotional complexity and aesthetic polarity. I want my paintings to make people unravel the hidden faces; peel away the color; then nurture forever what they find.
My figures convey the anxiety of disappearance or the erosion of identity. They also suggest the jarring intrusion of memory; the shock of recognition, or the agony of ambiguity. They have already dissolved and appear in another canvas or are buried under layers of paint.
